"A perfect representation of the best parts of her mixed heritage, Arwen Undomiel possesses exceptional beauty," Bilbo read, translating the Elvish for the young hobbits in front of him.

He became thoughtful. "It's the Maian that does it. But with each passing generation it gets more diluted. Everyone forgets to look to the previous generations, where it flows more strongly. How unfortunate that the true beauties of the elven race are not acknowledged, as legend only remembers the women."

Merry and Pippin exchanged a glance and then followed the old hobbit's gaze. Lord Elrond, hearing Bilbo stop talking and feeling their eyes on him, paused in his conversation to Glorfindel to glance towards the three hobbits.

The bright, late-afternoon sun illuminated three-quarters of his face in golden light, making the red highlights in his long sienna hair more pronounced, his skin seem almost luminescent and bringing out the silver flecks in his blue eyes. Presented quite literally in a different light, his beauty – which had hitherto gone unnoticed by the young hobbits – was breathtaking.

Elrond frowned slightly as he regarded the hobbits, and then turned back to Glorfindel, dismissing their staring at him as an odd quirk of the Shirefolk.
Another for the 100 Themes Challenge.

Tried to make this 100 words, failed. :XD: So it is a double drabble, with 200 words. I'm working on condensing my writing. It's harder than it looks. >.<

Hopefully it makes sense D:

Why this prompt? Well, the name 'Elrond' comes from the elvish el meaning 'star', and rond, meaning 'dome'. Star-dome, Heaven, there you go.* :P

You never really hear about the elvish guys and their beauty. There's Glorfindel's hair and Legolas being 'fair beyond the measure of men' but that's about it. :hmm: So this is my attempt to even the score a little bit.

It just seemed to me that the relative beauty of different elves is something that Bilbo would think about. :)
(That's a history book he's reading, btw.)

For the record, my Elrond looks a little like Hugo Weaving, but younger and more classically good-looking.**

Everyone belongs to Tolkien.

*Reference to My Big Fat Greek Wedding. If you don't get it, nevermind. xD
**Because as much as I love Hugo and as good-looking as he is, he shows his age a little too much for an elf - even one who is part human.

Nice :D!
It's true, the guys beauty it's not so frequently mentioned and this is unfair! In the books Arwen is said to be like Luthien, but also like Elrond in female form. Then logically Elrond is like Luthien in male form!
I'm very fond of him too ;-)

Haha this is funny. XD I think Ecthelion gets his fairness mentioned at one point too, but yeah, that's about it for the guys. (I always kind of thought Hugo Weaving was a little too old too...and too angry, but that was probably not his idea XD)

Yeah, a lot of them are "fair", but their beauty is not famed like Luthien and Arwen and whoever else.
(Haha I think it's the eyebrows XD It's sort of funny though because he was 40 at the time, which isn't too old in terms of the character...I don't think a younger actor could have pulled it off. But yeah, it shows a bit too much.)

I think it might've been the eyebrows, and also the really high forehead, it kinda makes him look like he's balding a little. XD I do agree that a younger actor would've been implausible though. Oog, he's gonna be really old in The Hobbit. XD

Like how you translated Elrond's name and used it in your fic .... I've always seen Elrond as a male version of luthien....so he must be very beautiful......I agree.....as much as I like hugo weaving and as handsome as he is ... he shows his age a bit too much ...... love it dearest

Yes, I have too. It's something I think a lot of people forget. :P It's always, 'Ooh, he's the son of Earendil/father of Arwen/great-grandson of Tuor' and never 'great-grandson of Luthien'. That should be the first thing people associate with him. =P

But what about Luthien's son Dior? He was called "The Beautiful," and he was most certainly male. :) And Maedhros' mother name means 'well-formed one.' Also, his younger brother Celegorm is called 'the fair,' and while that was originally intended to be a reference to his hair (in early versions of the Lay about Luthian and Beren, his hair was described as golden; interpretation about later texts is open to debate - aka is whatever you wish it to be, essentially), it could also be considered just a reference to his smashing good looks. >__> And I think that in the various volumes of notes there are a few other scattered references to good looks on the part of male elves? Like something about Finwe having (what Elves probably consider) sexy hair. Though it is true that you hear far, far more about female beauty than male.

My mental Elrond was thought up before I ever saw the movies, so he looks very little like Hugo Weaving, but Weaving does have a lot of the gravity I'd associate with 3rd-age Elrond, I think... And I think Weaving is a handsome man, though I'm totally with you on Weaving showing his age a bit more that I'd think even a part-human elf would show. aha. Anyway -- this is supposed to be a review of this double drabble, so uh...

I like it! And hey - sometimes 100 words just aren't sufficient. But I like the idea of Bilbo picking up on this and thinking about it, pointing it out to his students. I mean the other hobbits who listen to him. And I like your poetic translation of Elrond, too. :)

Poor Elrond, though, with the staring Hobbits. At least they can get away with stuff like that on the excuse that clearly Shire-culture is different. >__>

( and my apologies for a rambling comment that's probably longer than your double drabble. xD; )

...Yeah, you have a point :XD:
Although, it still seems to be more about their hair than their facial features. :P

 If LotR had been made 10 years earlier, I think he would have fit Elrond's 'agelessness' a little better. If I ever imagine Elrond to look like Hugo, then I think of Hugo circa Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Thanks :D
I've always thought that Bilbo is the type to just sit and watch the elves go about their daily business, and therefore notice things that others necessarily wouldn't.

Haha, yes. They don't stare for too long, though ;)

(That's alright. I'd prefer a long, rambling comment than a generic one-word comment :))

That's true about the hair for most of them - though I don't recall any mention of Dior's hair when he's called 'The Beautiful.' But I think Elves found nice hair to be attractive, anyway? from what I remember from some of the histories and things. So I dunno. /rambles

Hm. Looking at pictures, I think you might be right about the agelessness fitting a bit better, though Hugo still doesn't fit my mental image of Elrond. :) That's what I get for reading books before movies, eh?

But you're welcome! And yes! I'm sure Bilbo spent a lot of time just watching the elves do things. He probably had lots of fun things to tell Sam, Merry and Pippin (and Frodo, too), when they came by. :3

Sorry it took me so long to reply. You're welcome. As far as improvement, it's nothing major. It's just that the second to last paragraph strikes me as ever so slightly "canned" or "cliché." Also, in the last paragraph "...their staring at him..." is a little awkward.

But really, it doesn't need changing if you don't want. I am in awe of your pithy glipse into character! :worship:

Yeah, I can see what you mean. Having just 'Their staring' would be better, I think, but then that would mess up the word count. :hmm:
(Also, that image of Elrond in my head was what inspired this whole thing :XD:)

Thank you for your opinion, I'll definitely take it into account if I ever go back and re-work this. :)

His age makes him look slightly tired methinks- which goes for the time period we get to see Hugo ;P So i can understand the younger-ness.

I love this btw, I reckon Melian's blood ran strongly in El, and he really isn't one ot notice how hot he is.. ^_^

LOTR time period! lol. By that time, he has no Gil, no Bri, his kids are getting cloe to making thier choice, Arwen (who i always imagined as a bit of a daddy's girl) is shacked up with a mortal and guess what? Gil's death is now most definitely in vain as the Ring and Sauron are back- he deserves to look tired...

Will go take a lookage now ^_^

Yeah, I would be surprised if he didn't look tired, taking all of that into account.

Of course, if Gil-galad was returned to him then I dare say that he wouldn't look quite as tired :P (Unless, of course, he'd had a late night ;))

I doubt they would keep D's brown hair, considering that it says in the book that Thranduil has blond hair...then again, I'm pretty sure they're going to write Legolas and Galadriel into the story, so it wouldn't suprise me :/

Hmm...I think I might test this theory and make a manip of David with blond hair :D

I did look, can't work out if I love it or... I dunno, the jury is out on it for me! lol.

Galadriel WILL be in it- Cate blanchett is confirmed, as is Saruman and Frodo.. >.<

Fingers crossed Leonard Nimoy does choose to play the voice of Smaug! (Think Spock's voice, and the dragon firework from FOTR. What an amazing bit of artistry and casting that would be!)

I think if Gil came back he might get a tad more stressed out, what weith him now being back with Bri in Valinor and all, gah! Plunnies are eating meh.. Fancy writing a Bri/Gil/El fic for me? lol.. I have trouble writing normal fic plunnies properly, let alone those 3 in the same one!

Actually, I'm not bothered. So long as they don't give important roles to people who don't exist it'll be fine. The story needs more girls, if you don't want it to look weird on screen.

..."the woodland king's guard"? *immediately contradicts herself* =P
Well, she might still get some pretty dresses I guess. Hopefully.
