Le Salle des Roses - The Rose Room

Birds twittering. Pre-dawn light seeping in through the window. It was cold.

These were the first coherent thoughts that Celebrían had as she woke up. She rubbed her eyes and sat up, realising that she was alone: Elrond wasn't there. She frowned, looking around the room, eyes adjusting to the semi-darkness before alighting on a piece of paper stuck to the door. She got up and pulled the red blanket off the bed to wrap around her shoulders, effectively covering her grey nightgown as she padded over to the door. She raised an eyebrow as she read the note. If Elrond ever left a one, then she could be sure that it would tell her where he had gone and why. Except this one didn't.

Follow the footsteps...there's a surprise.

Bree opened the door and looked out into the hallway, where a line of red paper footprints led off around the corner. She bit her lip in excitement and followed them eagerly, the blanket still wrapped around her. She reached the end of the trail, where a pile of footprints had been put in front of a partially open door. She walked over to it and pushed the door open, her mouth falling open with what she saw.

The room was absolutely filled to bursting with red roses. The waist-high benches had three rows of vases reaching all the way across three of the walls, the overhead shelves had the same but only one row, and hanging baskets hung down from the ceiling. The floor was scattered with bright crimson petals and the room was filled with the flowers' sweet scent. Virtually every part of the wall was covered with roses except for the big window, which let in bright sunlight. Their scent hung in the air like heavy mist.

"Oh, wow." Celebrían breathed, walking backwards as she looked at the ceiling.

"Morning." Came a familiar voice. Celebrían turned around and looked towards the source of the voice. Elrond stood in a corner, pulling garden gloves from his hands as he smiled warmly.

"So, what do you think?"

"...Are there any red roses left in Middle Earth?" she asked, still amazed at the sheer amount of flowers in the room. Elrond laughed, rubbing the back of his neck as he surveyed his handiwork.

"Ahh...maybe one or two."

Celebrían laughed. "This...this is amazing. Did you do it all yourself?"

"I had help," he said simply as he walked towards her, putting his arm around her shoulder.

"Glorfindel?" she guessed. The half-elf nodded and Bree grinned.

"I thought so."

"You know what today is?" Elrond asked quietly, kissing Bree's sleep-mussed hair and carefully brushing it behind one of her ears.

"14th February," she replied.

"Do you know why humans find this day so significant?"

"No, why?" the blonde frowned slightly as she tried to recall a shadow of a memory where the 14th of February had been mentioned, but it evaded her grasp.

"They call it Valentines Day. Basically they treat it as a day to spoil the one they love, although I don't see any reason why that shouldn't be done every day," he guided Bree over to the window, where there were two small boxes covered in black velvet on a small, light-coloured wood table. Bree looked at them curiously, hoping that they were both for her and dying to ask but not wanting to seem greedy. Elrond smiled.

"Pick which one you want to open first."

Bree grinned at him and took a step towards the table, considering. She bit her lip, almost bouncing in excitement. After a few minutes of consideration she picked up the box on the left - the bigger one - adjusting the blanket so that it wouldn't slip off her shoulders if she took her hands away. Elrond smiled fondly as he watched her and crossed his arms, leaning against the window frame; he knew that she would pick that one. Celebrían gasped in excitement when she opened the box.

Inside the box, laid on a cushion made of delicate white silk, was a particularly stunning necklace. The pendant and chain were made of a fine, sparkling mithril, but it was the pendant that instantly caught her eye. It was heart-shaped, and inside the heart was rose, much like the ones surrounding her. The flower itself was made out of a beatifully carved ruby and the stem of the rose curved gently down to the point of the heart, then circled around and back up again to form three leaves, each one conatining a tiny diamond at its centre. The necklace took her breath away and she looked up at Elrond, her eyes sparkling.

"It's beautiful!"

"Just like its owner." Elrond walked over to her and gently lifted the necklace out of the box, stepping behind Celebrían to fasten it around her neck. Bree turned to the left to look in the mirror, then threw her arms around Elrond happily.

"I love it, thank you so much!" she withdrew her arms but didn't pull out of his embrace as she looked down at the pendant, admiring its delicate perfection.

"Wait, there's still another box!" Elrond said, laughing at her momentary single-mindedness.

Bree looked up, having completely forgotten the other box in her infatuation with the rose pendant. The half-elf picked the second box up and gestured her over; Bree complied, regarding him with a slightly confused expression as he knelt down on one knee. Her mind instantly snapped to the most obvious explanation for his current pose, but...no, that couldn't be it!

Elrond smiled mischievously, then opened the box and held it out to her. There was a ring inside, and not just any ring: it was the most beautiful one she had seen. The diamond - if that's what it was - shimmered with every colour of the rainbow as the light hit it at different angles and it seemed to glow slightly from within, as if it contained a fraction of the light of a Silmaril. It was cut in a tear-drop shape, flanked by two smaller clear diamonds and set into a simple mithril band.

"Celebrían of Lorien, will you do me the honour of becoming my wife?"

"Eru Almighty," was all Bree could say as she covered her mouth with her hands and stared at him with wide eyes. Elrond, having something of an unfair advantage, waited patiently. After a few minutes Bree grinned behind her hands when she realised she wasn't dreaming.

"Yes! Yes, yes!" she agreed, laughing. Elrond grinned back at her and stood up, slid the ring onto her right index finger then brought her hand up to his lips and pressed a kiss to her knuckles.

Bree smiled and stood up on her tiptoes to kiss her now-fiancé properly on the lips. Elrond entwined his arm around her waist and when they broke apart Bree leant her head against the half-elf's shoulder, smiling as Anor decided to show herself and peeked timidly over the mountains.

The newly-engaged couple glanced at each other, needing no words to convey emotions. The new day signified the start of a new life, where all they needed was each other.

He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring and said,
"Marry me, Juliet; you'll never have to be alone
I love you and that's all I really know;
I talked to your dad go pick out a white dress,
It's a love story, baby just say yes."
Happy Valentines Day to all my friends and watchers! :blowkiss:

EDIT: I changed the dscription of the necklace, so it matches a necklace that I got for christmas (which I liked because it reminded me of this). The preview picture is a photo of it, only, mine doesn't have a ruby in it, haha :)

Elrond's so romantic :aww: Song lyrics are from Love Story by Taylor Swift. As you've probably guessed, it's pretty much their song =P

So, I started writing this after last Valentine's, and it was partly inspired by a scene in The Notebook.

After a couple of days of working on it I just left it for a while and didn't come back to it until last week, haha. It was originally titled Le Salles des Roses (lit. 'The room of roses', but not translated literally because I don't want it to be), but that was before I seriously started the 100 themes challenge.

Thanks to ~CarrotxStuffing for helping me with the descriptions :blowkiss:

OMGITSAHETFIC. Wooowwww. More Elrond/Celebrían to come, methinks. If I can actually commit to finishing a chapter :paranoid:
